Chasing tomorrow
2019

ACRYLICS ON CANVAS + interactive light which starts flickering when approaching the artwork

120 x 180 cm

‘Chasing tomorrow’ is an interactive painting which unites Picaroon’s two artistic disciplines: technical, interactive elements and acrylic painting. The piece shows a life-size figure running out of the darkness towards the observer, trying to reach a physical light which is flickering outside the painting. As the viewer approaches, the light becomes even more restless and begins to flicker more intensely.
This piece questions our life goals and the personal fulfillment that most of us strive for. Can we ever really achieve our goals? Is it worth compromising other areas of life for the sake of an individual goal? How close must and can we come to our goals in order to feel meaning? Can a goal ever be evaluated objectively? And – most importantly – what do we miss while we’re fixated on chasing our goals?

A 21st century's dream
2019

ACRYLICS ON CANVAS
138 x 99 cm

‘A 21st century dream’ addresses the role and self-image of an employee in a global tech company. The golden fruit basket in the right corner symbolises the whole range of attractive incentives these companies offer, such as working from home, state-of-the-art devices and a free fruit bowl, which they sell to employees along with the promise of fun, meaning and self-fulfillment.
However, the reality of these kinds of hyped companies is often very different. Instead of meaning, employees often experience alienating work staring at a screen. The only corporate value companies really have is increasing their share price. Hierarchical pressure and competition obscure the image of ‘one big corporate family’. In line with Calvinist concepts, which are seen as one of the many origins of capitalism, the worker in the middle of the picture has a halo, which represents the attempt to experience meaning through success and hard work.

PAST DAYS

ACRYLICS ON CANVAS
138 x 99 cm

The inspiration for ‘Past days’ was a week-long hike through the solitary Scottish Highlands. Digital devices such as smartphones were deliberately left behind. After a few days without any contact with the outside world, a deep, calming sensation descended upon us of being in a single place, in a single moment.

Home once

ACRYLICS ON CANVAS
100 x 140 cm

‘Home once’ is a tribute to the artist’s student days in Scotland, where she lived in Edinburgh, free from the social and material constraints of adult life. Edinburgh’s local peak, Arthur’s Seat, on which she spent many evenings, symbolises the feeling of freedom that this time embodied.
